We came into school feeling very uncomfortable. Ever since his other had been in hospital, he had been wearing a suit without buttons. Every time button came off, he made do with pin. He always meant to sew on his buttons but there was never any time and he was not interested in sewing. This morning, the last button had disappeared from his trousers, and now they were held up by a piece of string. Whenever he stood up, the class laughed. He looked so funny, holding his trousers up with one hand, while he tried his best to answer the teacher’s questions. After school was finished, things worsened for Button Wamu. Each of the boys asked him if they could borrow his piece of string. “‘You must be stupid if you can’t sew on a button,” laughed the girls. By the time he got home, Wamu was so ashamed that he decided he needed to learn to sew for himself. He searched for a needle and thread. The only needle he could find had a very tiny eye, and he found it difficult to push the end of the thread through the eye of the needle. Either the thread or the needle slipped from his unskillful fingers every time he tried. But, at last, the needle and thread were ready. With his left hand, he held the button on the material while he pushed the needle up from the wrong side of the material. But the needle came through the material at the side of the button. He jumped with pain as the needle went into his finger instead of the Needle button. He tried again, and this time the needle came through the hole in the button.
He tightened the thread, which came right through the hole, and the button fell off. Then he realized that the thread ought to be fixed to the material before he could stitch the button on. He sewed a small stitch in the material, just where he wanted to stitch the button. He covered the stitch with another one and tightened the stitches by pulling the thread. Now it was easier to push the needle up through one of the holes in the button. He pulled the thread through, and then pushed the needle down through the other hole and through the material. He repeated these stitches, up and down, several times, Soon the button was fixed to the material by a short stalk of threads. Then he pushed the needle sideways, up through the material and just to the side of the button. He twisted the thread round and round the stalk, between the button and the material. “I am an expert tailor!” he thought proudly as he looked at his sewing.
He finished by pushing the needle down at the side of the button and pulling the thread to the wrong side of the material. Two more tiny stitches in the material underneath the button strengthened his work, and then he cut the thread close to these last stitches. At last, all the buttons were stitched on. His suit looked better already. Perhaps he ought to mend the torn hem of the jacket, too. It wouldn’t do to spoil the suit by leaving the hem un-mended. He sewed carefully along the hem, making small stitches so that the hem did not show on the right side of the material. At last, the suit was ready, and it looked almost new. Next morning, Wamu strutted happily into school. “yah!” said the girls. “Look at Wamu. Isn’t he good-looking!” Hem From then on everyone wanted to be seen with Wamu. No one ever called him stupid again. He had learned to sew for himself This is the way to sew on a button, as Wamu did. Make 2 small stitches in the material at the place where the button must go. Tighten the stitches. Push the needle (a) up through one of the holes in the button and then (b) down through the other hole and the material. Repeat 2 several times, until the button is fixed to the material but do not tighten the stitches. Push the needle up through from the wrong side of the material at one side of the button. Loosen the button by pulling it away from the material, Now twist the thread round and round the stalk of the button between the material and the button. Push the needle down through the material at the side of the button. Sew two tiny stitches as in 1 and cut off the thread.
