THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1

Jerry Sichone put his hand above his eyes and watched the small cot in the sky getting larger. Now he recognized the small plane it was bringing the two other scientists Tom and Minyama back to the Bangweulu swamp after they had been on a visit to Lusaka. The noise made by the plane’s engine seemed like an explosion in the silence. He watched the plane bounce and then bounce several more times as it landed on the rough new runway Before reaching the end of the runway it bounced again. Then it turned slowly round and stopped Silence returned. The door of the plane opened, and Tom Heaven and the pilot Mutale got out “Hi, Jerry! shouted Tom “Make sure that you move those lumps of earth away from the runway next time Did you see how much we bounced as we landed? 2 Jerry waved back at him. He had been left in charge of the scientist’s house and equipment while the others were away in Lusaka He was glad to see them return. Although there were villages not far away Jerry felt as if he was alone on the small island in the swamp Well have you got anything to report to us?” asked Tom as such of them drank a bottle of beer a few minutes later Yes tell us what’s been happening said Minyanim Sorry told them that he had been out every day, as usual studying the lechwe around the swamp It was the flood season and he had to travel by canoe as well as on foot He told them that the herds were moving with the edge of the food as it advanced just as they always moved back with it when it retreated Have they started to mate yet?” asked Tom Jerry told them that he had seen hundreds of Lechwe gathering together near the southern line of Black Lechwe trees and he had heard the rattle of home He said that he had seen lots of males fighting against each other about their territories Yes, the mating season seems to have started,” he said. Soon they’ll all be gathering together 3 The scientists were living in Bangweulu area to study the Black Lechwe which live there. Lechwes are members of the antelope family and Bangweulu is the only area in the world where the Black Lechwe can be found

There are many kinds of antelope in the continent of Africa and there are many other kinds of lechwe. But you can only see the beautiful Black Lechwe around the Bangweulu swamp. And now scientists are afraid that in a few years’ time no-one will be able to see any Black Lechwe, even in the Bangweulu swamp. They may all have died.

Fifty years ago, the population of Black Lechwe in and around Bangweulu was enormous. There were more than half a million lechwe Now there are only about 16 000. Jerry, minyanim and Tom’s job was to find out why the population of Black Lechwe had become so much smaller from disappearing completely. during the last fifty years, and how these beautiful animals could be saved

  1. They discovered that, although some lechwe died of disease and some were killed by lions, very few of them ever died of starvation or malnutrition change from about 500 000 to only 16 000 Certainly it was neither disease nor the lions which had made the population Even in the year since they had started their work, the scientists had noticed the lechwe population getting smaller. Part of their work was to fly over the herds of Black Lechwe in their small ‘plane and take lots of photographs Later they studied the photographs and counted the number of lechwe in the herds. By using this method, they were able to count the numbers of lechwe in the whole of the Bangweulu area. They counted them regularly and were astonished when they discovered how many lechwe were disappearing. Gradually the scientists had become more and more suspicious found plenty of evidence to prove it. that it was human beings who were slaughtering the lechwe. And they

They saw the poachers’ traps and nets. Sometimes they even saw them killing the animals. As the planes flew over the swamp they saw the poachers slaughtering hundreds of lechwe and carrying them away in canoes But the poachers didn’t care whether they were seen or not. Although they knew that they were doing wrong, they also knew that the plane couldn’t land either on the floodwater or on the soft swampy ground. Often the poachers just waved to the ‘plane – and continued to slaughter the lechwe.

Now minyanim wanted to know whether Jerry had seen any more poachers while they had been away in Lusaka. Jerry said that, as usual, he had seen several groups of poachers through his binoculars. “But even when I used the binoculars, I wasn’t able to recognize them,” he said. “They were too far away The others asked Jerry what the poachers had been doing when he had seen them through the binoculars. “Well, they had already captured their prey each time that I saw them,” replied Jerry. “I don’t know whether they used guns, nets, traps or spears. But with my binoculars I could see that there were lots of dead lechwe in their canoes. “I suppose they were ferrying them back to the villages, said minyanim “Or to the people who have come from the Copperbelt to buy the slaughtered animals,” interrupted Tom. “I’ve often seen the poachers from the plane, ferrying the animals to cars which wait for them on the drier ground “Yes, those canoes are used to ferry far more lechwe than the local people in the villages can possibly eat by themselves,” said Jerry Then he said that while they were away Lusaka talking with in Government that’s about the poaching he had gone to visit the local villages When he had asked about the poachers, some of the village pole told him they had seen big cars arriving in the area and leaving again loaded expect the poachers are going to some of the with the slaughtered lechwe Hm! said Tom butchers in the urban areas and making lots of money by selling the lechwe My sure that’s true” agreed Minyan “People in the urban areas win pay the butchers lots of money for the lechwe meat expect the poachers and the butchers can make huge profits out of this poaching business They discussed the problem again, although they had discussed. many times, before. They knew that most of the local villagers lived in poverty. The inhabitants of the Bangweulu swamp and flood plain had to live in crowded villages on the small areas of higher ground which the food water never covered.

After they had farmed these small areas for years and years the ground had, of course, become less and less fertile until it was difficult to grow even cassava. Luckily the village people could always catch plenty of fish. Bangweulu is famous for its enormous numbers of fish. But although they usually ate fish, the local people had always slaughtered a few lechwe when they needed meat.

The scientists knew about this and had discussed it before. They knew that if the local people killed only as many lechwe as they needed to feed themselves they would not cause the lechwe population to be much smaller They were not the main enemies of the Black Lechwe. At last, the scientists were sure that the main enemies were the poachers. They killed the lechwe not to feed the local population but to sell meat for a large profit in towns and cities a long way from Bangweulu. And it was they who would cause the Black Lechwe to disappear completely if no-one stopped them in time. The big problem for the game guards was more lechwe how to catch the poachers and how to prevent them from slaughtering any. The men decided that they would go out in the ‘plane the next day and have a look at what was happening.

Tom said that they also needed to take some more photographs, to continue their counting of the THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1 THE BLACK LECHWE OF BANGWEULU – PART 1

Lechwe. The next morning, very early, they flew over the flood plain and looked down at what seemed like a sea of bright green grass – grass that they knew was very nourishing for the lechwe. There were some areas where the water was deeper and was covered with an enormous floating mat of wild rice on the drier ground, there were many anthills, some of which were three meters high Some even had a palm tree on top of them.

As the plane came near, hundreds of birds flew up from the swamp where they had been feeding There were many kinds of ducks as well as other birds “Look at those white-faced ducks over there.” said Jerry suddenly, as hundreds of the ducks flew upwards, terrified by the noise of the plane. “What a pity that those ducks don’t realize this plane isn’t such a threat to them as the guns of the poachers are,” said Tom.

They saw other birds with long legs wading in the deeper water searching for their food. Once they saw an elephant, wading with difficulty through thick mud. Then they saw the lechwe. Thousands of them were wading through water searching for new unflooded areas to graze on. As the ‘plane flew over many of them lifted their heads, and their sparkling white faces. The birds are wading and throats could easily be seen. Very few of the in the water Black Lechwe are black. The females and all the young lechwe have grey-red-gold coats but the males have black areas on the sides of their throats, necks and bodies. The other parts of their bodies are brown. Mutale, the pilot, said that he would fly lower and they could start taking photographs. Tom picked up the camera and began to take photograph after photograph of the herd. “Look!” said Mutale, the pilot, suddenly. “Look over there”

They all picked up their binoculars and looked in the direction in which Mutale was pointing. In the distance, they could see several men near the edge of the herd. “Poachers!” said minyanim. “Quick. Let’s fly closer. I want to see what methods they are using to kill the lechwe.” As soon as the poachers heard the ‘plane’s engine they looked up. Jerry said to the others that he could see guns under their arms, and that there were several dead lechwe lying in the half-flooded area. Nearby, two of the poachers were wading into the deeper water to fetch some of the animals they had wounded but not killed. All the other lechwe were running, terrified away from the men

They know we can’t do anything to stop them, said minyanim angrily “No wonder that the lechwe are disappearing so fast “Perhaps we could catch these and take them to the police, Tom But how?” both minyanim and Jerry asked, at the same time. We can’t land on this swampy ground Tom explained that they could return to the camp and ask the game guards to organize a check on the roads leaving the Bangweulu area. “I’m sure those poachers aren’t local men,” said Tom “If we’re quick we’ll catch them, with their prey, as they leave here for the Copperbelt.” “Good idea,” said the others. Mutale turned the ‘plane around and increased its speed Perhaps it they showed the Government real evidence of what the poachers were doing to the lechwe, the poaching would be completely suppressed

“Hurry!” said Tom to Mutale. A few hours later, they were on the side of the road with several game guards, ready to stop the first car which left the area. It was almost dark, and they were all very tired. But they were determined to catch the poachers. “Look! Those are headlamps in the distance,” said minyanim. “Is everyone ready?”

We do have the right! We represent the Government and the people of Zambia The Government realizes that if you poachers can continue, you’ll slaughter all the animals in Zambia That’s your opinion People have always hunted animals in Zambia. Nobody said that the lechwe were being kept just for tourists to look at-though tourists would bring money to this area if they came. People might not live in such poverty if tourists brought money and opportunities for jobs to Bangweulu.

Don’t you realize that if the lechwe are allowed to increase to about 100 000, some of them could then be slaughtered to feed people. (to his friends) It’s no use arguing with them. This is a story from West Africa. It is about a king who was so rich that he had lots of land, many cattle, and five wives. But he had no son. He had many children, but they were all girls. This caused the king great “Who will be king after I die?” he asked himself. He worried about the future all the time, and he kept going to places near and far to see wise men. He paid them lots of money and gave many presents to the gods. He gave chickens and goats, even cows and horses. But still he had no son. One day, a man, dressed in rags, came to the palace. He said that he was a traditional doctor from one of the villages. He asked whether he could see the king. But nobody would allow him to enter the palace. He promised that he could give the king a son. But nobody believed him. They just laughed. At last, because they were tired of him standing outside the palace, the king’s advisers asked the king to see him. When the man was brought in front of the king, he told the king what he must do. He gave the king five palm nuts and told him that his wives must eat one each. He said that they would all have babies, and that at least one child would be a boy. Everyone laughed at the stranger in rags. But he didn’t ask the king for any money, and the king was ready to try anything. He didn’t mind that it seemed silly. So, he gave the palm nuts to his wives. But he didn’t give a palm nut to each one. There was one wife that he hated. Instead of giving her a palm nut, he gave an extra one to his favorite wife. The hated one was given nothing. Nobody ever spokes to her, so she made friends with animals. One of her friends was a lizard. This lizard noticed the favorite wife throwing her second nut away. The favorite wife was so sure that she was going to have a son that she thought she didn’t need the extra nut. The lizard knew it was a magic nut, so he carried it quickly to the hated wife, who ate it. After a short time, all the five wives knew that they would have babies. Four of them were sure that their babies would be boys. They laughed at the hated wife and the king made a law that all the female children born must be thrown away. Only male children would be allowed inside his palace.

But the king didn’t make the law for all the wives. When the four wives had their babies, the babies were all girls. But those baby girls weren’t thrown away. The law was made for the hated wife. When the time came for the hated wife to have her baby, two of the other wives took her among the reeds on the bank of the river. When the baby was born, the two wives said it was a girl, and quickly threw it into the river. They caused the hated wife so much unhappiness that she wanted to die. But she didn’t die. She continued to live unhappily, hated by the king, for nine long years. But the baby which the two jealous wives threw in the river wasn’t a girl. It was a boy. The water didn’t carry him far. He was caught in the reeds and survived. An old woman who came down to fetch water saw him lying in the reeds. At first, she thought he was a large doll. She had never seen such a big doll before. But then he started to cry, and she knew he couldn’t be a doll.

She tried to look after A doll him in a way which was right for the son of a king. She told him who he was and that, when she had discovered him, he was lying in the reeds at the edge of the river. The boy loved the old woman like a mother. One day, when he was nine years old, he was playing by himself when he heard a dog growl. He was surprised, and he looked up. He saw one of the king’s hunters with a dog. The hunter and the dog started to follow the boy. This made him angry and he sang to them: “King’s dog, don’t bother me! King’s hunter leaves me alone! My father, the king, made a law That all male children should stay vet

And females should be thrown away. But I, a boy, was thrown away: So, the king’s people are my enemies.” The hunter was surprised. He ran as quickly as he could to the palace and told the king about the boy’s song. The king was astonished. He said that his men must go and find the child immediately. When the king’s men returned, they told the king that the boy was still singing the same song when they found him. Then the king sent more people to find the boy’s father and mother. They searched for a long time and, at last, the found the old woman beside her hut in the forest. When they told her why they had come, she said that the boy was the real son of the king, but that she would give him only to his real mother. She sent a message to say that all the wives must cook their favorite food. She would send the boy to the palace and whichever dish he chose to eat from would have on it the food cooked by his real mother. Of course, each of the first four wives said that the boy was her son, but the unhappy wife said nothing. The king gave his first four wives a cow, a goat and some onions for them to cooking food for the boy They spent hours rubbing spices into the meat and chopping the onions. Then they cooked the best food they had ever cooked in their lives

But the hated wife was given nothing to cook, not even onions. She tried her best. She got some potato skins and some onion skins which had been thrown away by the other wives. She cooked them as well as she could and put them in an old cracked dish. Use in Onions At last, it was time for the boy to choose. The other wives wore beautiful dresses and sat smiling and waiting They laughed at the hated wife as she brought her dish of potato and onion skins They thought that her food was not good enough to be chosen by the boy She was dressed in rags and hadn’t even got a comb to comb her hair With She would have felt better, even dressed in rags, if her hair was combed But the king hated her so much, that he wouldn’t even give her a comb The old woman had already brought the boy from the forest He started to look at the dishes. He spent a great deal of time going from dish to dish, looking at the food and smelling it. But he didn’t She is combing touch any of the food cooked by the four favorite her hair wives. Instead, as soon as he saw the dish of potato and onion skins, he started to eat

Then he saw the woman dressed in rags, sitting in a dark corner. He knew immediately that she was his mother. He went to her and put his arms around her. She said that she was so happy to see her son that she wanted to cry. Everybody watched, astonished. Then people started to celebrate. The king gave her rich clothes and allowed her to move from her poor hut into the palace At first the four jealous wives were terrified that she might try to murder them for tricking her so cruelly. But the boy’s mother said that she wouldn’t punish them She said that they could continue living in the palace if they promised not to cause any more trouble for her. And the king was completely happy at last.
